ABSTRACT
The humanist movement spread beyond Tuscany, south
through Umbria and the Marches, to Rome and the
kingdom of Naples. As in Rimini, imagery was used at
the courts of Urbino and Naples for both political and
artistic purposes. In Naples, architecture and urban
design under Alfonso I was infl uenced by Vitruvius, the
ancient Roman engineer and architect.
