ABSTRACT

The territory was secured by the religious orders, beginning with the Jesuit Juan Maria de Salvatierra. In 1697, Salvatierra, accompanied by a captain, five soldiers, and a few servants, established the first mission-presidio at Loreto. He studied in Alcala, Spain, as well as in Mexico City and was sent to serve the Jesuits in the Californias in 1730. In 1733, accompanied by three guards, he founded a new mission, Santa Rosa, on the southeast coast of the Baja Peninsula. He arrived at a time when various indigenous groups in the territory were plotting revolt against the missions’ presence. The salient point of similarity among tribes of the Californias is their household possessions; otherwise they are totally and distinctly unlike.
