ABSTRACT

Research using ethnographic techniques has become fashionable. In the past twenty years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of published works in the field. This concluding chapter offers a friendly guide to the literature. It briefly discusses the works that are helpful or have known to be helpful to others. Martyn Hammersley and Paul Atkinson provide a solid overview in Ethnography: Principles in Practice. The product, Ethnography Unbound, provides a realistic portrait of student ethnography, including the hurdles of entry, access, ethics, and exit all within the course of one semester. Ethnographic methods involve reflections and interpretation; reflections on the fieldwork experience remains a popular genre. In addition to the overviews there are a number of books on selective topics. Writing is difficult. In his book Writing for Social Scientists, Howard Becker provides a fine overview of the writing process.
