ABSTRACT

For purposes of this chapter, the definition of VE being used by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Research Study Group 28 is adopted. This group is investigating human factors issues in the use of VE for military purposes. Their definition of VE (they use the term virtual reality) is (Ehrlich, Goldberg, & Papin, 2000):

This covers immersive VE systems that are directly perceivable by participants through their senses. It does not include training on electronic systems that use sensor (e.g., radar) data as their stimuli.
