ABSTRACT

The chapters in this book offer unique windows through which evaluation policies, practices and concerns in five European countries may be inspected. The views afforded show diversity and commonalities among the countries; however, the landscapes presented are limited in terms of the scope and focus of the authors. We are confident the book’s readers will appreciate these limitations but that the cases nevertheless will provide sufficient insight to resonate with the readers’ points of interest. This final chapter will discuss some of the common threads that run through the cases. The chapter will address important issues which may inspire reflection, such as what the purposes of evaluation are or could be, how to define or expand the content of evaluation and the role of self-evaluation in an era of accountability. We will end the chapter by suggesting a ‘roadmap’ for reflection on the various aspects of school evaluation.
