ABSTRACT

Humans coexist with a vast array of snakes, insects, and sea-dwelling organisms that may bite or sting if disturbed or threatened. Some of these species are aggressive in their interactions with man. Others assume a defensive posture when they perceive harm to themselves or to their offspring. It is critical for medical personnel to familiarize themselves with regional creatures that can pose a threat to the local population, because recognition of the agent of a bite or sting is the first step in prompt and appropriate treatment.
