ABSTRACT

I INTRODUCTION Evaluation and examination of acutely injured spinal patients is a complex multifactoral process that begins with specific in-field management protocols and culminates in a well-organized and individualized treatment pathway. Trauma to the spinal column and spinal cord can be a devastating, life-altering injury that can have major debilitating, long-term effects. Thus it is critically important that a thorough and accurate evaluation be conducted in order that appropriate measures be taken in a timely manner so as to minimize permanent disability. This task can be exceptionally difficult in the acute trauma setting secondary to factors such as altered mental status, combativeness, and uncooperative behavior that may be the result of an associated head injury or substance abuse. It is for this reason that imaging of the spine plays such a crucial role in the initial evaluation of the traumatic spine-injured patient.
