ABSTRACT

I INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE The incidence of spinal cord injury (SCI) has been estimated to be between 30 and 40 cases per million per year, or about 10,000 new cases annually (1). A recent report from a state-based registry found an incidence rate of 59 cases per million for patients in hospitals, and 77 per million including prehospital fatalities (2). There is not sufficient reporting of SCI in the United States to determine whether the incidence has changed in recent years. Prevalence of SCI has been estimated to be between 721 and 906 persons per million population, or about 183,000 to 230,000 persons in the United States (1).
