ABSTRACT

Pressure ulcers have been defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ; formerly Agency for Health Care Policy and Research) as lesions caused by prolonged exposure to pressure that lead to tissue damage (1). They represent areas of necrosis caused by compression of soft tissues between bony prominences and external surfaces. This damage can be relatively minor or may lead to massive necrosis involving deeper tissues that can cause significant morbidity and mortality.
