ABSTRACT

Infectious complications are frequent in uremic patients. Several decades ago Montgomerie et al. (1) reported on an increased incidence of pulmonary infections, wound infections, peritonitis, urinary tract infections, septicemia, and infections of the gastrointestinal tract in renal failure patients. Bacterial infections were found to be the most common cause for hospitalization and the second most common cause of death in hemodialysis patients (2).
