ABSTRACT
Organized crime’s oldest and most effective protection against criminal prosecution is to either murder the witness the government plans to use or to frighten the witness from testifying. In the United States prior to 1970, neither course presented significant difficulty in accomplishing. It was not unusual for individuals who did take the witness stand to be brutally tortured and murdered.
