Clinical Applications The indications for the subgluteal approach are those for sciatic nerve block: anesthesia or analgesia for knee, leg, and foot surgery. Because of the distal needle insertion site, the posterior cutaneous femoral nerve may remain unblocked. This has implications for patients undergoing knee surgery or procedures requiring the use of a thigh tourniquet.
