Summary

The approach of particle swarm optimization (PSO) is applied to design a heat sink system. This innovative approach is a robust stochastic evolutionary computation technique based on the movement and intelligence of swarms. The chapter presents the PSO algorithm in detail and investigates the rationale and means of application of the method to the optimal design of a heat sink. In the presented approach, a plate-fin heat sink design is realized for maximum dissipation of the heat generated from electronic components, as represented by the entropy generation rate. In the process, the best heat transfer efficiency is achieved.
