ABSTRACT

Hypoglycemia occurs when blood glucose levels are lower than the lowest limit of normal physiologic fluctuations. This level is approximately 70 mg/dL and is rarely encountered in healthy individuals. Iatrogenic hypoglycemia, however, is a common problem in the management of diabetes. It is also of special concern for adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) because complications associated with recurring hypoglycemia such as impaired physiologic defenses against hypoglycemia and an inability to recognize lowglucose levels [hypoglycemia unawareness (HU)] commonly occur. Hypoglycemia is one of the most feared complications of diabetes treatment and is often the cause for emergency care visits.
