ABSTRACT

Introduction Clostridium difficile has emerged as a major nosocomial pathogen, particularly affecting elderly patients receiving antibiotic treatment. Reports of C. difficile infection ( CDI) have risen markedly since the disease was first recognized in the late 1970s, and continue to increase. The emergence of epidemic and toxin A-negative, B-positive C. difficile strains has led researchers to refocus their investigations of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of C. difficile. The following ten studies illustrate the issues associated with the control and prevention of CDI, in addition to current research approaches and novel treatments.
