A. Cancers of the Stomach

Adenocarcinoma of the stomach (ACS) is the second most common cancer worldwide. There are two distinct biologic and etiologic subtypes of ACS, the epidemic-intestinal type, and the endemic diffuseinfiltrative type. The epidemic form causes high mortality around the world from Central and South American countries such as Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Venezuela to Asian nations such as Korea, Japan, and southern China. Additionally, the prevalence is high in European countries such as Germany, Italy, Iceland, Portugal, and Romania. The highest incidence worldwide is in the nation of Japan and thought to be associated with dietary factors such as food preservation techniques. In the United States, ACS is the 10th most common type of fatal cancer.
