1. SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR ANGLE CLOSURE GLAUCOMA
In 1857, the German ophthalmologist Albrecht von Graefe announced at the first Inter-
national Congress of Ophthalmology held in Brussels, that he had discovered a surgical
cure for acute glaucoma (1). This involved a sector iridectomy, which he observed to
effect a long lasting cure. He published this observation in 1869.
