The number of patients annually hospitalized in the United States with the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) approximates 250,000 (1). The incidence of recurrent disease and the medical cost associated with post-thrombotic complications is of the same magnitude. The cost of DVT treatment is estimated at US $1.2-2.4 billion annually (2).
