The Treatment of Mixed States

One of the main criticisms to the concept of bipolarity is the existence of mixed states (1,2). Indeed, if there are only two opposite poles, mixed states should not exist. The American Psychiatric Association classification of mental disorders does not address this contradiction, allowing for mixed bipolar states that actually involve the full manic and depressive syndrome.
