ABSTRACT

As Tsuang and Marneros (1) pointed out, almost 20 years ago patients with schizoaffective disorder present a conceptual problem to theorists, a therapeutic problem to clinicians, and a diagnostic problem to researchers. That was the case since it was described in 1933, and that has been the case for the last 20 years. In fact, the DSM-III-R recognized that the schizoaffective disorder represents one of the most confused and arguable concepts in the psychiatric nosology. In this chapter, we will try to present the current knowledge about this uncertain disorder, focusing on practical approaches for its treatment.
