ABSTRACT

In general, thresholds for speech tests and thresholds obtained by averaging the pure tones in the speech frequency should differ by no more than 6 dB. Discrepancies may be found between the two in cases in which there is a sharp dropoff of pure-tone thresholds across the 500-3000 frequency range. Discrimination difficulty may result in a wide disparity between SRT and pure-tone average losses. There also may be a wide disparity in cases in which the loss is produced by emotional rather than organic causes.
