ABSTRACT
Decreased night vision, usually referred to as night blindness or nyctalopia, comprises conditions in which the rod vision mechanism is absent or subnormal. There is no parallel involvement of the cone vision mechanism. Nyctalopia is probably the preferred term, as many patients are not necessarily ‘‘night-blind,’’ (although this Greek term means not seeing at night: nycta, night; al, no; opia, vision).
