ABSTRACT

It has been suggested that some groups of workers are more at risk of such disorders than others. This chapter reviews the published research on groups at risk.

BACKGROUND

Studies in the United States estimate that approximately 25% of the American working population considers its voice as critical to job performance (1). Therefore, for a large section of the working population, the prevention of occupational voice disorders is essential. Comparable figures have been reported in Finland (2), but data are not available for the United Kingdom or Europe as a whole; however, there is no

reason to believe that a smaller proportion of the United Kingdom and European workers are not similarly dependent on adequate voice and speech.
