ABSTRACT

Jonathan Hutchinson is a convenient starting point for reviewing the history of

sarcoidosis (Table 1). In Hutchinson’s day, sarcoidosis was a curious skin illness of uncertain significance. With time, the disease gradually revealed its

multisystem manifestations. Advances in biochemistry, immunology, genetics,

and molecular technology have added new dimensions to our understanding of

complexity of sarcoidosis. Each addition to our knowledge increases our

curiosity, but the cause of sarcoidosis continues to elude us.
