ABSTRACT

Two Echinococcus species exhibit medical relevance as causative agent of pulmonary forms of echinococcosis. Most importantly, infections with

Echinococcus granulosus result in ‘‘cystic hydatid disease’’ or ‘‘cystic echinococcosis (CE),’’ which affects the lungs in a considerable ratio of cases. Echinococcus multilocularis, causing ‘‘alveolar echinococcosis’’ (AE), affects the lungs relatively rarely and then usually upon metastasizing from

primary hepatic lesions.
