ABSTRACT

Calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA), also known as calciphylaxis, is a syndrome of cutaneous microvascular calcification of unknown etiology causing painful violaceous skin lesions. These then progress to nonhealing ulcers and gangrene. It is a serious complication of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) associated with high mortality. The pathogenesis and risks for CUA remain poorly understood. At the present time, there are no standard treatments.
