ABSTRACT

The hallmark of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is involvement of the axial skeleton, but up to 25% of patients will actually first present with pain involving the peripheral joints, particularly the hip (1). Up to 50% of patients with AS will eventually develop symptomatic arthritis of the hip and in the majority of these patients both hips will be involved (2–4).
