ABSTRACT

Effective workload management strategies need to be based on an understanding of both the factors affecting people’s experience of workload, and its effects on performance and employee health and well-being. In recent years, the need for more effective strategies has become evident, as the changing nature of work and job demands has resulted in high levels of fatigue, stress, and related health problems, such as cumulative musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Drawing on concepts and evidence from physical and cognitive ergonomics, and from organizational and health psychology, this chapter describes some of the main causes, correlates, and effects of workload.
