ABSTRACT
Over the last few years noninvasive positive pressure ventilation has established itself
as having a major role in the management of patients with severe chronic obstructive
airway disease (COPD). Although its use was first evaluated in chronic stable patients
with ventilatory failure due to COPD, where it has really made a major mark is in the
acute situation.
