ABSTRACT

The dermal route is the most likely exposure route for almost all pesticide-

containing products. The assessment of percutaneous absorption is therefore an

important part of the safety evaluation of pesticide products. Within the European

Union (EU), data on the absorption of the active ingredient through the skin are

obligatory for inclusion in Annex I of Directive 91/414 of the European Community

(1). Inclusion of active substances in Annex I is only possible if the crop protection

products containing them can be used with acceptable risk to humans. Evaluation

of risk to populations who may be exposed to pesticides (e.g., manufacturers,

workers, spray operators, bystanders) is essential in order to authorize the use of

these products in the market.
