The Syrian hamster and Mongolian gerbil have been used extensively in research for a variety of disciplines. Therefore, unless noted otherwise, the information in this handbook will focus on the Syrian hamster (Figure 1), the most commonly used hamster species in the laboratory,

and the Mongolian gerbil (Figure 2).
