ABSTRACT

Marine equipment presents an extremely demanding environment to tribologists. While the machine elements and lubricants used are substantially the same as in other applications, some fundamental differences regarding the operating environment play a substantial role in their success. Chief among these are the chemical nature of the fuels used, the operating temperatures achieved, and the speed ranges commonly encountered. Also, a ship at sea may need to be totally self-sufficient for weeks at a time.
