ABSTRACT

The indoor environment in its broadest sense includes housing, the immediate external environment of the structure, and other facilities where we may work.

Each of us understands to some extent the importance of our home environment. However, the physical environment for millions of less fortunate families is conducive to disease, behavioral problems, accidents, and social problems. Many times during the course of history, attempts have been made to create more attractive housing and to eliminate health-related environmental hazards. This chapter is concerned with the origins of housing problems; the types of health problems related to housing, neighborhoods and their effects on housing; the types of housing, the environment within dwellings; the structural soundness of dwellings; and the various techniques for improving housing conditions, indoor air pollution, and injury control.
