ABSTRACT

On September 11, 2001, four jet airliners loaded with fuel were hijacked by terrorists and were used as missiles to destroy the World Trade Center in New York City and to damage the Pentagon in Virginia. Three of the four planes achieved their goal, whereas one was apparently downed by passengers, who knew from cell phone conversations, that the other three were used to severely disrupt the United States. These actions resulted in the deaths of 3063 U.S. citizens, and citizens of over 80 other countries. An additional 5000 casualties occurred. This single act of terrorism was meant to destroy the financial network of the United States, to kill as many innocent people as possible, and to change foreign policy.
