ABSTRACT

The reconstruction of large perineal wounds is often difficult for the plastic surgeon. Tumor extirpation of the anal and perirectal areas as well as pelvic regions is one of the most common reasons that reconstruction is required. In many cases, preoperative radiation has been utilized, or patients with recurrent tumors received radiation therapy after the primary procedure. The reduced healing capacity of these irradiated wounds compounds the tlifficulty of reconstructing this area. In this chapter we will briefly outline the most commonly used reconstructive methods and evaluate their outcomes with regard to operative morbidity, function, and patient satisfaction.
