ABSTRACT
The element silicon is one of the most abundant in the Earth’s crust, ranking second only to oxygen. Its estimated crustal abundance is 27.7% (w/w) whereas that of oxygen is 46.6% (Mitchell, 1955). The concentration of silicon in various components of the Earth’s surface is listed in Table 10.1.
