ABSTRACT

Before introducing shape descriptors, it is worth noting that a natural means to produce interesting features is by obtaining new measures from previously calculated ones. For example, once the convex hull or skeleton of a shape (Chapter 5), which are features by themselves, have been obtained it is possible to consider their perimeter or area as new features. Therefore, the reader should bear in mind that combinations of the representations discussed in Chapter 5 and the shape measures discussed in Chapters 6 and 7 are also potentially useful tools for solving specific problems.
