The spatial distribution of the electrostatic potential surrounding a con-

ducting surface (open or closed) is determined at the most fundamental

level by Laplace's equation, together with the appropriate boundary con-

ditions, decay conditions at innity, and, if necessary, edge conditions. The

precise formulation of these conditions was described in Section 1.3.
