ABSTRACT

This entry discusses the nature of information systems (IS) and the educational opportunities and careers in the information systems field within library and information science (LIS). The entry includes descriptions of the types of institutions that teach IS from a LIS point of view, standard curricula for B.A. and M.S. degrees, careers open to graduates from beginners to skilled professionals, and opportunities for continuing education. These educational possibilities are put in perspective by considering the nature of the IS industry with which professionals deal, the strategic use of IS in libraries, and the future directions of IS.
