ABSTRACT
This entry provides an overview of information services in Japan, with separate sections on libraries, archives, and museums. Libraries and collection of documents have a long history in Japan, based on a fundamental respect for written information and knowledge. Archives in Japan are divided into three main groups: public archives, university archives, and private archives including business archives. The history of modern museums in Japan dates back to the time of the Meiji Restoration. After examining the historical evolution of libraries, archives, and museums, the author discusses current trends and activities such as professional education, professional associations, digitization projects, and cooperative efforts.
