ABSTRACT

Some have claimed that library and information science has been insensitive to the information needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. This entry attempts to address the information needs of LGBT people. It puts these needs in historical context, briefly outlining the LGBT liberation movement, the role of information professionals as part of that movement, and the present day understanding of queer identity. Attention is especially paid to a review of the literature on LGBT information seeking. This entry concludes by emphasizing the importance of LGBT studies in the field and the need for further research in this area.
