ABSTRACT
This entry provides an introduction to public libraries throughout the world including an overview of the mission, roles, services, governance, legal and financial framework, collections, human resources, facilities, marketing and performance measurement. The trends, challenges, issues, and future of public libraries are also discussed. The entry is written from the perspective of informing a new library school student, legislators and decision makers, and/or someone looking to find basic information about the purpose and role of public libraries worldwide.
