ABSTRACT
This entry presents a brief overview of UNESCO and the activities implemented by its Information Society Division in pursuit of its overall mandate to promote the free flow of ideas and universal access to information. It looks at the origins of the program, its current strategic objectives, and some of its activities, especially those relating to libraries and archives, which are designed to meet the development needs of the world's population.
