ABSTRACT

This entry provides an overview of contemporary libraries and librarianship in the United Kingdom. After an introduction which identifies some of the key phases and determinants of library development, separate sections are included which discuss national libraries; public libraries; academic (university) libraries; school and college libraries; special libraries. In each case a basic structural and statistical description is provided, the history of the sector is presented in outline, and current policy issues and concerns are discussed. The entry concludes with an examination of United Kingdom librarianship, its professional associations, and library education and research.
