ABSTRACT

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) is an international organization for both individuals and organizations that is dedicated to the facilitation of learning, communication, and the advancement of appropriate technologies for all who are involved with scholarly communication. The Society is unique in that it draws from all parts of the scholarly communication chain—authors, editors, librarians, information specialists, publishers (commercial, university, and society), printers, subscription agencies, and creators and vendors of various technology solutions. This article covers the Society’s first thirty years, from its founding in1978 and early history, its evolving organizational structure and programs, and its current and future plans for providing a forum to address challenges to scholarly publishers and producers.
