This entry provides an overview of the evolution of motion picture archiving from its beginnings as an uncoordinated set of craft-oriented skills to its modern status as a profession. It discusses the role of the profession's major historical associations including the International Federation of Film Archives, the American Film Institute, the Library of Congress, and the Association of Moving Image Archivists.
