ABSTRACT

Some moments perhaps rare in the life of a baby, can be thought of as meditative moments. In England there is an organisation named PIP-UK (Parent-Infant Partnership), which together with the internationally renowned Anna Freud, Tavistock Centres and the Parent-Infant Clinic provide psychotherapeutic interventions to distressed families with infants. In the ongoing debate about the effect of "nature" and "nurture", there has been a greater emphasis on "nurture" that is the postnatal family environment as the primary determinant of individual differences. The term family will be preferred to describe any referred mother-baby or the triad, which includes fathers and siblings; fathers can be present in the mind of the mother and baby, even if not physically attending sessions. The male pronoun he will be used to define the baby in general terms and when not referred to a specific female baby.
