ABSTRACT
John F. Kennedy took strong action by ordering a naval blockade of Cuba. He adapted well to changing circumstances in a fast-moving crisis, showing flexibility under extreme pressure. He balanced principle with pragmatism in pressuring the Soviet Union to remove its missiles from the communist-ruled island. He persevered. And, with compromise, he achieved success in getting the missiles out.
