ABSTRACT

The use of recycled concrete aggregates retrieved from construction and demolition wastes in new concrete mixes is becoming a popular application. Recycled aggregates are composed of original aggregates and adhered mortar. Recycled aggregates concrete has several drawbacks that cannot be overcome by external curing. Insufficient curing might significantly reduce the expected performance from the concrete, therefore internal curing is needed. Internal curing requires some sort of water store that can supply water to the cement paste during cementitious reaction. General requirements for internal curing of cementitious materials are explained in this paper. Several materials are proved to have the beneficial effect of supplying curing water internally. Internal curing can enhance concrete properties such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, autogenous shrinkage.
