ABSTRACT

The testing of any electrical installation, regardless of whether it is a dead or a live test, can involve an element of risk. Therefore the inspector must be prepared to recognise possibly potential hazards and the level of risk. There are a number of statutory and non-statutory documents that clearly explain the means of applying electrical safety measures. Accordingly they should be consulted, especially where electrical safety is paramount. When an installation, or part of it, has been made dead to allow work to be carried out, adequate precautions must be taken to prevent any part of it from becoming electrically charged or made live. Ideally all circuits and electrical equipment should be de-energised, locked-off and proven dead before any work takes place; however there are circumstances where this may not be possible. There are always risks, and electrical hazards, when installing electrical equipment.
